Huntington 2002 California Merlot

The Variety

Merlot is similar to Cabernet Sauvignon, which it partners in red Bordeaux, but Merlot’s tannins are softer and its texture more supple. It is widely planted in California, where the varied microclimates allow for many flavor profiles achieved both in the vineyard and by the winemaker’s craft.

The Vintage

The 2002 vintage was unique and different from that of 2001. The summer was long and cool followed by late September heat. Maturation in the vineyard soared rapidly. For Huntington, the result of the small crop and lengthy hang-time of the 2002 growing season is a wine with great depth and concentration for a California Merlot.

The Wine

Purple-black intensity defines the 2002 Huntington California Merlot. The nose opens with a wealth of bright plum and cherry flavors balanced by a nice streak of supportive acidity softly blanketed by subtle tannins. A well-crafted and richly flavored wine that is solidly fruity from front to back.
